Credit Repair Services
The Truth About Credit Repair Services
The truth is, nobody can "repair" damaged credit. That's something only you can control, and it takes time. Therefore, any companies that identify themselves as credit repair services are not companies to be reckoned with. There are things you can do on your own to repair your credit that don't require the help of any sort of "credit repair services." For instance:
- Get a copy of your credit report and look for any errors. Be sure you get one from each of the three major credit reporting agencies--Experian, TransUnion and Equifax. You are entitled to a free copy of your credit report from each of these agencies once every 12 months.
- Be sure to report any inaccuracies on your credit report to the credit reporting agency in writing.
- Try to pay triple the amount of your required monthly minimum on your credit cards.
- If that isn't possible, try to work out a repayment plan with your creditors.
As a last resort, you can contact a credit counseling agency for help. The Department of Justice has a list of government approved credit counseling agencies on their website. If you don't want to use one of those, just make sure the agency you use is nationally certified and accredited, make sure its counselors are nationally certified and accredited, make sure they have a physical street address and make sure they don't ask for payment before services are provided. In addition, before you sign a contact, be sure they give you a copy of the "Consumer Credit File Rights Under State and Federal Law." These are just good rules of thumb when choosing a reputable credit counseling agency.
